Ho`s travel experiences / LA beach

My travel from Esslingen over Stuttgart, Paris, New York to Los Angeles can be easily described with one single word: Disaster!
Short description: Airport Stuttgart stopped all flights because of strong thunderstorms with lightnings. After some waiting I finally flew to Paris, where I only got my next flight, cause it was delayed as well. My suitcases had different plans, what I would discover later. In New York I easily got through the customs though. No big deal, if you don`t have any suitcases to check…
Nobody knew where they were, but at least I knew they were NOT in New York. Thank you for that information, Delta. I ran to get my next plane to LA, but it was delayed when I arrived. They boarded another flight to London right before us, but shortly before it was boarded, they discovered a technical problem and all the people had to get back out of their plane. Poor guys, I thought. Still waited. Then we got boarded. We flew off. I tried to find the silhouette of New York, but the pilot seemed to just fly in a big circle, so I could not see anything. I discovered, that one flap did not close. As I looked on the screen, I realized, that we indeed were flying in a circle. The announcement told us, that one of the hydraulic systems fell out, but it would not be dangerous and we would fly back to NY. I wasn`t too trusting in that announcement, since we landed in company of 15 firetrucks with flashing lights and sirens. Nothing better than an adrenaline rush after 20hrs of traveling - AWAKE NOW! They couldn`t repair the first plane, so we got another one. We took off with another 5hrs delay. I tried to call Andi and Mike, but they did not take the call, so I left a message on the mailbox they should pick me up at the airport at 3am. The message didn`t make it to them, neither did the other 6 messages I left in the next hours til 7 o`clock, when I still stood in LA at the airport, without baggage and without a working mobile - a little desperate, to be honest. I decided to leave another message and go to the next beach by taxi and wait for them. There, Andi found me finally and I can say I was really happy to see him. 32 hrs of traveling.

After saying hello to my new teammates and having some more sleep (this time in a real bed), we went out for Manhattan Beach Pier. This seemed a perfect place to setup slacklines and attract people. It worked out well. We quickly attracted a bunch of surfers, that were really motivated to learn walking and even do some tricks right from the very start. Throughout the day we introduced Mike into proper german. What a “day”. Guy-leh shy-zah!

Splash-lining in a storm and a broken nose…

…Which started with a very sleepy and sweaty journey to Charleston.

This was probably the most rockin sesh we had so far during the afternoon! Disregarding the unbelievably humid temperature, so many people were so open to what we were showing them. We met some brilliant new mates here. Like…truly great guys that stuck with us for the rest of the evening. So when the apparently DAILY downpour of rain came (and i mean it REALLY hit hard) we headed straight for the local apartment pool.

Which turned out to be another one of the coolest (if not the coolest) session so far. The power of a single piece of nylon webbing over a swimming pool is incredible. Suffice to say we had a CRACKING time. No…seriously though, I smashed my nose jumping into the pool. Blood…EVERYWHERE! Dah well! I’m fine and smiling as always…just rather swollen!

Pressing an ice pack/cool beer to my nose for the rest of the night, we made our way to another favorite lodging of ours…DAYS INN!!!

The rest, they say, is history!

Venice Beach Eco Fest

On Saturday we went early in the morning to Venice Beach Eco Fest. We easily found our booth and started to setup a slackline. In the moment we rigged it up once more David Hasselhof came around and told us that they don’t allow slacklining. Totally frustrated we tried to talk to every official possible but had no success. The only way to get a permission was to go to the city hall and get one… on Saturday… for today… as fast as possible… IMPOSSIBLE! So we decided to give it another try until we are kicked off. We found a perfect spot with trees all around a little hill, set up our lines, rolled out our banner and started to have some fun. Everybody who passed by stopped, watched what was going on there and joined. The was a mass of kids who never stopped trying, but also some teenagers and adults had a try.
Around 4pm we had to break up, because Hayley had to go to the airport… home to Boulder. Actually we wanted to pick up Holger at 10pm, but he gave us a call and said the had to return to NY because of technical problems. so we went to bed and waited for his call…

Hasselhof to the rescue!

It was Friday when we decided a nice relaxed beach slacking session was what we needed. We prepared ourselves and called all the best contacts in the area for some first hand beach experience. Next task we made a trip to the hardware store to pick up some sand anchors for the masses of anticipated crowds. After some slight complications with cutting our anchors into the right size pieces we set out to the beach. We quickly found our parking space and unpacked out car only to realize we had three massive armloads or various gear including two 4″x6″x 4′, three massive planks, three step stools, six pieces of torn welcome mats, two brown torn shipping boxes(full or promo gear), one shovel, and finally three mischievous looking people avoiding the lifeguard towers. We scouted out the beach and figures the best place to set up would be right next to the intense game or volleyball going on next to the pier. (Indestructible Sam time) So I started digging our holes for the massive sand anchors and finished my labor a quick hour later. It was right about that time David Hasselhof decided to dramatically run over, flowing red shorts and all, and tell us that we were a safety hazard. He said slacklining was too dangerous ( a reckless airborne kite dives into the belly of a sunbathing grandma behind him) to have around the beach. We were bummed out but still found a place to slack on some palm trees near the beach.

Beach Sesh…

Today, the original plan was to catch up with the triathlon that was goin on in Wilmington this morning. But we managed to miss out on a large portion of sleep. We stayed at a real dude called Adams house-who we found through couchsurfing.com-and ended up having a real social gathering.

Unfortunately this meant we didnt wake up at like 9:00, so by the time we got to the point we were aiming for (at 10:00!) it had been and gone! But this doesn’t keep a slackliner from his work!

We headed directly to Kure beach. We set up our line under the pier..and it was schweeeeet! We met so many people. A couple of them were already involved with the triathlon I mentioned earlier. These guys ruled!

Due to the SUPER sweet waves there were plenty of surfers around also. Something has to be said about a surfers natural feel for a slackline. The rocking motion of the waves is such a close comparison to the movement of a slackline. Especially as the movement of the water was really throwing Miha, Chris and me off balance and not them, it was a real lesson for us all!

After this awesome beach session we were obliged to go watch the USA vs Brazil “soccer” final in downtown Wilmington. Fair shout to USA for getting so far!…well, diamond comes from coal right?! (checked out some of Wimbledon after ofcourse…go Murray!)

Then we went back to the now legendary “Econo-Lodge” and slept off our beach burned bodies till the next day…

Slackin in Dixie Land

If  no one else has ever been to the Southeastern US, I would highly recommend it.  Being a native New Englander (yes, that is in the US), the South is a totally different breed of people.  Slow, southern drawl predominates and certainly makes for interesting conversation.  From where we left off, we stayed in Richmond for one more day.  Again, it seems like people do not like to be outside.  We checked out the park by the capital building….. and found a Segway tour.  Then we went to Bell Island, a beautiful park in the middle of the James River running through Richmond.  Then….the Segway tour followed us.  We checked out some kids rope swinging from the bottom of the interstate…sketch.  We also contacted a climbing gym who thought that our slackline would be a liability.  We finally had a solo sesh in a beautiful little pine forest.  Awesome for us.

From there, we retired to our hotel and a little pool session and then bed.  We set out for Raleigh, NC the next day, but being a sleepy State Capital, we peaced out for UNC Chapel Hill, the state’s flagship school. Being the designated trip navigator, (an American), I decided to find a large park, which was completely wooded…  We finally set up a line between a tree and a light post and had a live band to the likes of Dispatch as a soundtrack.  Back at the parking lot, Ash had aparently found a huge wooded green right next to the car….. Oops!

We spent the night in Wilmington, NC and headed to the beach today.  Beautiful!  Huge waves and an awesome response!  One guy even walked the whole line.  It was pretty amazing.  At about 3, we packed up for Wilmington’s Third Annual BrewGrass Festival, home to local beers and 6 hours of Bluegrass.  It was in a parking lot of all places, so we opted to set up a line outside.  Before even running the line, a cop told us we couldn’t set one up on City property without a permit.  After mouthing off a bit, we gave in, entered the grounds and actually had an even more amazing response.  We handed out cards, stickers and talked to at least half the people there.  Many offered to show up in the morning at a Triathalon we are going to and someone even offered for us to stay at his house, take us out on his boat and throw a party for us.  Just tell everyone you are a slackliner and the world falls into place!

They’re not monkeys….they’re apes

Yesterday we went to Santa Clarita, to see the apes at the Gibbon Conservation Center. None of us realized that the Gibbon is a super endangered type of Ape, two species of Gibbon are actually the most endangered primates in the world! The GCC is the only place in the world devoted exclusively to the Gibbon, whose natural habitat is disappearing rapidly. The GCC helps keep the Gibbons from becoming extinct by caring for families that create offspring, and giving captive Gibbons a home.

We got some pictures of infant Gibbons at the conservation center, and a researcher named Gabi showed us how a one-year old Gibbon has learned to walk on Gibbon Slacklines! He was a little reluctant while we were around, but he’s definitely the only one-year old I’ve ever seen walk a slackline, usually they just drool and bounce up and down, but this tiny little Gibbon had no trouble at all! It was actually crazy how graceful the adult Gibbons were, they swing around so easily it looks like they’re flying. There were slacklines in a few of the family enclosures, but I didn’t see any others walk the slackline. Gabi said they have to get over being scared of it before they’re comfortable enough to play. I guess we’ll just have to come back to the GCC in a couple months and they’ll be better slackliners than the humans.

We did a little slackline demo, Gabi can slackline a bit too, it was her who taught the tiny Gibbon how, and one of the child volunteers, Garret looks like he could be a wicked slackliner before long. The GCC was a great stop on the tour, it was awesome how excited they were about Gibbon slacklines, and it’s nice to know someone’s looking out for our namesake. Slackline is for everyone

If you’re ever in the Valley, be sure to check out Yosemite Fitness in Clovis, a climbing/fitness/martial arts hybrid gym. It looks like they have a little bit of everything there, including a sweet slackline set up right in front of the door! We had a great time there slacklining with members and the staff, gibbonized some individuals and learned some new tricks ourselves!

Slacking on the Hill

Hey all, Chris here.  Joined the East Coast tour Tuesday night.  Ash and Miha grabbed me at Dulles, and we stayed at a hotel in Alexandria, VA.  With me came the team’s debit card.  Thankfully, since Ash and Miha were down to their last dollar.  No, really.  Ash spent his last bit of cash paying for the parking fee.  The lucky dollar is now imprinted on the car ceiling.

The next morning, we happened upon a Gibbon St on our way to get on the highway.  A nice start to the tour.  We got into Richmond and found this little park with a pond in the middle.  We attempted a 100 foot line over the water, but the wind and length proved our enemies.  The water was also super gross, so checked out from there and into our hotel for a rinse.

From our experience, people in Richmond don’t hang out in parks too much.  We went to a couple super beautiful parks… and very few people were there.  Most were feeding Canadian Geese.  We finally stumbled upon Jefferson Park and met a couple of guys who were psyched on the line and then a hoard of kids from the neighborhood. The kids couldn’t get enough!  Check the photos.

From there, we hit up this great Ethiopian restaurant, which none of us had had before.  A little spiciness later, we retired to our hotel for some R&R by the pool.  Another day in Richmond for some parks in the city center.

Ribbons on the rocks and a cool new team mate…

Generally Miha has pretty sticky fingers and will usually hold on to things without realising, but yesterday was different. We realised he had left the laptop case at the Sportrock Climbing Gym! So we took a trek back there to pick it up and ended up having a little climb. Our timing couldn’t be better as there was a lady there practicing some pretty special acrobatics. Unfortunately I can’t remember exactly what it was called, but the pictures speak for themselves. Pretty breath taking stuff!

After watching the crazy ribbon lady (her name was Robin) for a bit we moved off back to DC  (very slowly to save our dwindling fuel supplies I might add). After having great success here on the first day we went back to the same spot we were at before near the Washington Monument. This proved to have little of the same success and didnt really manage to pull a crowd, but did bump into one of the guys we met at the Rock Gym. Small world huh? A little after he left we got politely moved on by the police. So we obliged and moved on to the airport to pick up a brand spanking new shiny team mate Chris, who turned out to be a lovable bundle of joy! :) I can see some awesome times ahead with him and I’m sure it’s gona be mighty useful to have a genuine yankee on the team!

On an unrelated note those of you who have been keeping up with the blog may have read something from Holger about us being helped out by the WCT team and their forfeit for this help was a picture of us slacklining in a dress and black lipstick. If they think this is going to happen so easily they have another thing coming. If we are to embarrass ourselves publicly they too should have to suffer some similar humiliation. Any suggestions from our devote fans will be greatfully received!

Keep on a-slacking folks!
